Abstrak

The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed language learning practices, particularly in English conversation training. This study explores learners' experiences in using AI technology as a conversational partner for English speaking practice and examines how such interactions influence their confidence, motivation, and communication skills. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed, involving twelve English language learners selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observations, and document analysis, then analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed four major themes: (1) AI as an accessible and non-judgmental conversational partner, (2) increased speaking confidence and learning motivation through repeated interaction, (3) personalized feedback as a facilitator of language development, and (4) limitations of AI-mediated communication, particularly regarding emotional depth and authentic human interaction. Participants perceived AI as a supportive tool that reduced speaking anxiety and provided flexible opportunities for continuous practice. AI-generated feedback contributed to learners' self-reflection and speaking improvement. The study contributes to the growing literature on AI-Assisted Language Learning by providing an in-depth understanding of learners' subjective experiences. The findings support social constructivist perspectives and suggest that AI can effectively complement traditional language instruction. Practically, the study highlights the potential of integrating AI-powered conversational tools into English language education while maintaining opportunities for meaningful human interaction.
