Abstrak

This study examined the representation of psychological trauma in The Bell Jar and explored literature as a medium of healing through the perspective of trauma theory. The research focused on how traumatic experience was symbolically represented and how narrative functioned in articulating emotional suffering and identity fragmentation. Using a qualitative approach, the study applied textual analysis to interpret symbolic imagery, narrative structure, and the protagonist’s psychological condition throughout the novel. The analysis concentrated on recurring symbols, internal conflict, emotional isolation, and fragmented identity as indicators of trauma representation. The findings revealed that trauma was portrayed through symbolic expressions reflecting despair, alienation, and psychological instability. In addition, the fragmented narrative structure mirrored the protagonist’s disrupted mental state and loss of self-coherence. The study further demonstrated that narration functioned as a reflective process through which traumatic experiences were expressed, organized, and psychologically negotiated. These findings suggested that literature not only represented emotional suffering but also provided a therapeutic space for reflection, self-understanding, and potential healing. The study therefore highlights the significance of literary narratives in representing marginalized psychological experiences and contributing to discussions of trauma, identity, and emotional recovery.
