MORPHOSYNTACTIC CHARACTERISTICS OF SERIAL VERB CONSTRUCTIONS IN ACEHNESE

This study investigates the morphosyntactic configurations of serial verb constructions (SVCs) in Acehnese, focusing on pronominal agreement, valency-changing morphology, and structural integration. The research employed a qualitative descriptive approach, combining fieldwork and library research. Data were collected through elicitation and unstructured interviews with four native speakers of the North Aceh dialect and were supplemented by Acehnese-language books and other relevant linguistic sources. The data were analyzed using the distributional (agih) and identity (padan) methods, focusing on person-marking prefixes and the syntactic behavior of serial verb constructions. Morphologically, the findings reveal that Acehnese SVCs lack connecting morphemes and exhibit strict prefix coherence, subject marking follows two patterns: full concordance (identical pronominal prefixes on all verbs) and single marking (marking restricted to the initial predicate). Furthermore, aspectual reduplication and the derivational affixes meu- and peu- target the serial complex as a single structural unit. Syntactically, the constructions display robust monoclausal properties, including a shared core argument, rigid word order, and a single macro-event boundary where negative and aspectual operators scope over the entire complex. Ultimately, this study provides critical refinements to the typological classification of serialization mechanisms in Austronesian languages
