Abstract

Amid the dominance of foreign-oriented English learning materials, local oral traditions remain underrepresented in English Language Teaching (ELT) classrooms. This article investigates the translation of the Acehnese Syair Do Da Idi into English as heritage-based ELT material. The research aims to identify the religious, moral, and cultural values embedded in the Syair, examine how culturally specific expressions are translated into English, and explore its pedagogical relevance for English learning. Employing a qualitative descriptive design with content analysis, the research used the original Acehnese lyrics of Do Da Idi as the primary data source, supported by literature on cultural translation, oral tradition, local wisdom, and heritage-based ELT. The findings reveal that Do Da Idi contains strong Islamic teachings, moral messages, and cultural values reflecting Acehnese identity. Translating the Syair into English required contextual and communicative translation strategies to preserve cultural authenticity, religious meanings, and comprehensibility in the target language. The findings position translation not merely as linguistic transfer, but as cultural mediation linking local heritage to global language learning. In addition, the translated Syair demonstrates significant potential as heritage-based ELT material for vocabulary learning, reading comprehension, speaking activities, intercultural awareness, and character education. The article highlights the potential of Acehnese oral tradition as a culturally responsive resource for contemporary ELT and cultural preservation.
